A natural sandstone arch overlooking Los Alamos, offering stunning views of the valley below.

Scenic view of Los Alamos Arch

Hidden in the canyons below Los Alamos, the Los Alamos Arch is a small natural rock arch that makes for a fun and relatively easy hike. The route begins at the Mitchell Trailhead on the edge of a residential neighborhood, where parking is extremely limited—there are only a few roadside spaces available near the trailhead.

The hike to the arch is roughly 2 miles round trip and descends into Los Alamos Canyon and up a hill before climbing back out. Along the way you’ll encounter a few short sections of rock scrambling, but most hikers will find them straightforward and manageable. While the trail can be steep in places, the arch itself is accessible without any technical climbing. Just be sure to follow the cairns.

Although it isn’t as large or famous as some of New Mexico’s other natural arches, its secluded setting and surprising geology make it a worthwhile adventure for visitors looking to explore beyond Los Alamos’ more well-known attractions.
