Pajarito Mountain is a local favorite above Los Alamos that offers a quieter alternative to New Mexico’s larger ski resorts. There are short lift lines, scenic views across the Rio Grande Valley, and easy access from northern New Mexico. Summer operations bring lift-served mountain biking and hiking to the forested slopes of the eastern Jemez Mountains.

Pajarito Mountain offers terrain for all skill levels, with a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs spread across the forested slopes above Los Alamos. While significantly smaller than resorts like Taos Ski Valley or Angel Fire, it provides enough variety for a full day on the mountain and is particularly popular with local skiers seeking uncrowded conditions.

Getting There

Pajarito Mountain is located about 7 miles west of Los Alamos. The drive takes approximately 20 minutes from downtown Los Alamos and climbs through the forests of the eastern Jemez Mountains. The mountain road is rough and challenging when iced over, so check conditions. Finally, your phone may route you through Los Alamos National Laboratory so be prepared to show ID at the gate.
